Bryan grew up playing ball hockey on the streets in North Vancouver and roller hockey in local lacrosse boxes. While attending business school at Simon Fraser University, a friend asked him to join his roller hockey team in PICH, a local league in Richmond, and never looked back. Bryan enjoyed playing on his first organized hockey team and played for this team for a few years in a couple different leagues. During this time, he saw an opportunity to start another league that would operate out of community centres in Vancouver, North Shore, Burnaby and Coquitlam. While playing in other leagues, he also developed various ideas and wanted to implement them in a new league. In 2004, he started the VIHL along with a few other friends.
At the start, Bryan juggled owning/managing the league while working in accounting. However, in 2010, he left his accounting job and started focussing on the league full-time and by 2012 he had grown it to 110 teams and 1900 players. He is proud of the community that has been created through the league and cherishes all the friendships that were formed over the years. In 2017, Bryan stepped down as league manager after 13 years to focus on other projects and to allow someone else to bring in some fresh ideas. The sport of roller hockey will remain close to him though and he will still be around the rink from time to time and will continue to think of ways to grow the sport and introduce others to this game that he loves.
